Welcome

Our mission is to educate, inspire, and foster a deeper understanding of the African American experience through engaging exhibits, dynamic programs, and community outreach. We recognize and honor the diverse African diasporas represented in Rhode Island, including those with roots in Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Explore, Engage, and Educate

The narratives of Black Americans in the Ocean State during the twentieth century is mostly of oral histories passed from one community to the next, one family to the next with an occasional note in the historical record.  We, the founding members of the African American Museum of Rhode Island (AAMRI) seek to document, interpret, inscribe, and share stories that broaden and deepen the understanding of our state.  What motivates this collective is a singular focus on embedding these narratives into the digital landscape where the limits of existing buildings and their current uses do not limit the importance of a place to these Black communities.  We can look for example, to the hardscrabble, industrial, and city politics of Providence in the 20th century as a landscape to explore and is the prototype for our model.
